O Level Computer Science

For O Level students starting Computer Science or revisiting difficult topics. Connect theory to worked problems and practise explaining your reasoning.

Online one-to-one · With Haseeb Zaheer · Urdu + English

01 / WHAT WE CAN WORK ON

Understand it.
Then put it to work.

Understand the systems

Build clear explanations of computer systems for Paper 1.

  • Binary, hexadecimal and data representation
  • Data transmission, hardware and software
  • The internet, security and emerging technologies

Turn a problem into a solution

Practise algorithms, programming and logic using Paper 2’s required pseudocode conventions.

  • Decomposition, algorithm design and trace tables
  • Programming constructs, testing and validation
  • Databases, SQL and Boolean logic

02 / A SMALL EXAMPLE

See the reasoning.
Have a go yourself.

Original learning examples by Haseeb. These are not official exam questions.

What does 00101010 mean?

Learning outcome: convert an unsigned eight-bit binary number to denary by using place values.

Your turn: convert 00010101 to denary. Explain which place values you used.

Read the worked solution
  1. From left to right, the place values are 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1.
  2. In 00101010, the bits for 32, 8 and 2 are on.
  3. Add those values: 32 + 8 + 2 = 42. Zero bits contribute nothing.
Reveal practice answer

16 + 4 + 1 = 21.

03 / HOW WE’LL LEARN

A starting point.
A clear next step.

Bring your syllabus code, exam session and a question you found difficult. Work from an explanation through a worked example to independent practice and feedback, using Cambridge’s required notation for exam answers.

04 / BEFORE WE START

Your questions,
answered.
